Hello everyone, and welcome to Central Texas!

With the rapid expansion of the new Samsung plant in Taylor, we are thrilled to see so many families making the journey from South Korea to join our growing community. We know that moving across the globe is an overwhelming experience. Beyond just finding a place to sleep, you are looking for a safe community, excellent schools for your children, and a taste of home.

To help you get your bearings, the Austin Korean Association has put together this quick guide on the local rental market, where to live, and how to navigate American culture—along with a trusted local partner who can handle it all for you.

Where to Live: Top Areas for Korean Families

When choosing a rental home in the Austin/Central Texas area, most of our Korean community prioritizes safety, top-tier school districts, and proximity to both the Taylor plant and Korean amenities (like H-Mart, Korean churches, and restaurants). Here are the top areas to consider:

  • Round Rock & Cedar Park: These are the most popular choices for Korean families. They boast highly-rated public schools (Round Rock ISD and Leander ISD), incredibly safe neighborhoods, and are just a short drive to major Asian supermarkets and Korean dining hubs. The commute to Taylor is also very manageable via the local toll roads.
  • Pflugerville: If you want to cut down your commute time to the Samsung plant while still living in a spacious, family-friendly suburban neighborhood, Pflugerville is an excellent middle ground. It offers quick access to Toll 130, making the drive to Taylor less than 20 minutes.
  • North Austin: Ideal for those who want to be closer to the city's core. It offers easy access to local Korean businesses and cultural hubs, though the commute to Taylor will be slightly longer.

Navigating a New Culture

Finding a house is only step one. For many family members, the language barrier and cultural differences can be the hardest part of the move.

How does the American healthcare system work? How do you set up electricity and internet? What is the proper etiquette for tipping at a restaurant, and how do you navigate the local DMV to get a Texas driver's license? These daily challenges can be stressful when you are still mastering English and adapting to American customs.
